about

Like a Villain, the stage alias of experimental composer and performance artist Holland Andrews, has offered Going In a sparse, moving composition that plays with a dynamic range of harmonic tones. Appropriately named How does looking at the sky make you feel?, the sonic world Holland creates is celestial and airy. It seems to induce a kind of mild synesthesia; sound takes on a visual quality. Listening becomes an act of watching; it’s as if we can see the sky unfold over the course of a full hour, or day, or week. Like clouds, the tonal forms in this arrangement change shape, at times shifting from bright chords to subtle, textured patterns. Deep into the piece, a muted voice enters among fluttering oscillations. Birds chirping and muffled piano punctuate the dreamy haze. What arises is a feeling of aerial suspension; the quality of the work is ethereal, as if emulating a sky filled with light.

On the whole, the composition is elevated and angelic, and yet there’s a hint of something unsettled beneath the surface. For example, a high-pitched note, nearly inaudible, almost induces a kind of spiritual madness—like staring into the sun for too long. This is then balanced by grounding forces: a metallic gong—distant, faded, reverberating—ushers in the final segment. Overall, How does looking at the sky make you feel? is a composition that harnesses the power of sound to take the listener into atmospheric, hypnotic realms.
